Overview

Research Question

People are innately generous, but the giving process can be complex, so it can be hard to find the right organisations to support, know how much to give, or understand the impact of a gift. The giving landscape is ripe for innovation that will make it easier for donors to give. As the body of research around individual giving behaviour grows, this project hopes to bridge the gap between research and real world innovation by getting better products into the hands of everyday givers. The goal is to optimise and reimagine tools and products that will help all donors give more and give better.

How might we reinforce a culture of generosity by creating charitable giving solutions that are more accessible, inclusive, and effective?

Survey results indicated that 84% of respondents feel they can’t afford to make a meaningful impact through donating, and 62% lack trust and confidence in the donation process.

After speaking directly with individuals, several key themes emerged from the interviews:

  • Lack of flexibility: Donors often struggle with being locked into rigid monthly donation schedules.

  • Finding motivation: People often struggle with inconsistent giving habits and find motivation to donate regularly.

  • Financial constraints: People want ways to make donating more accessible and affordable.

Potential donors need transparency and accountability to build trust and confidence in the giving process as well as alleviating the sense of obligation and financial strain.

Introducing a platform that alleviates the financial burden of donations while providing transparency and trust will increase potential donors’ participation and contributions.

The making of Giverr

I mapped the current user journey of donating on an existing donation platform from the data collected. From here, I identified stages that could be improved to make donating more accessible and engaging and enable people to find and support their favourite charities.

User persona

A user persona was created to better understand the needs, behaviours, and motivations of the target audience, helping to guide the design and optimisation of the donation platform.

Iterations

After testing an early prototype with a small group, feedback revealed the need for a more secure and streamlined onboarding process. Users suggested adding options to skip certain steps for a quicker experience. Based on these insights, I redesigned the onboarding flow to enhance security while giving users flexibility to complete or bypass steps as needed.

  • Initial testing revealed users felt limited by the original version of the donation screen, implying that it didn't offer enough customisation.

  • Users expressed a desire to have visibility into the accumulated round-up amount, facilitating a clear understanding of available funds for donations.

Home page optimised to prompt user action

  • A clear call-to-action for donations was added to guide users quickly to their desired charity, along with a horizontal scroll feature for seamless exploration of more charities within their interests.

  • These changes proved to help new users discover and explore the app's features and donation options more effectively.
